Solomon Sibbet and his older brother Aaron Sibbet are the ancestors of the majority of Sibbits and Sibbitts in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, Iowa, and specifically, the Sibbets, Sibbits and Sibbitts in Washington Co, Pennsylvania and Warren Co, Ohio. These two Sibbet brothers, Solomon and Aaron, are certainly closely related to many of the New Jersey Sibbets of the early 1800s, and may in fact be related to many of the other Sibbet families in Pennsylvania and beyond. They appear to have a Scots and Scots-Irish background, and have family legends of being rebels, horse thieves, and criminals wanted by the British, much like the other Sibbet families of Pennsylvania, the Cumberland Co, PA Sibbets in particular. In America, they and their descendants were American soldiers of the American Revolution, the Whiskey Rebellion, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and every major conflict which has involved the US military since. These early Sibbets were highly family-oriented, religious, Presbyterian and members of the Masons, and spent the majority of their lives as farmers and businessmen. Solomon Sibbet, the patriarch of this line, was a soldier in his youth, was a farmer for his life profession, had much tragedy in his life, and survived most of his sons, yet took care of his Sibbet family and grandchildren and defended his community as a good soldier.
SOLOMON SIBBET (Ancestral James Sibbet) (b 1765-1770 probably in Trenton Twp, Hunterdon, New Jersey, but possibly in Ireland, or Scotland , d 1834, West Bethlehem Twp, Washington Co, PA).
Solomon Sibbet, who was of Scots or Scots-Irish descent, was presumably born in New Jersey around 1765, although he could have been born in Scotland or Ireland. His father was the ancestral “James Sibbet”, who was believed to be from Scotland or Northern Ireland. Solomon’s older brother was Aaron Sibbet, the Revolutionary War soldier, who was described in the History of Carroll Co. Indiana. Solomon and Aaron Sibbet probably grew up in Hunterdon Co, NJ (where Aaron is noted in the tax roles in 1778), but they may have been raised in another locale, either elsewhere in New Jersey or the American colonies, or even in Scotland or Ireland.
Elsie Edith Sibbitt, the ggg granddaughter of Solomon Sibbet, stated in 1958, “The Sibbitts were not liked by either the English or the Scots (Gaelic Highlanders) when Sibbitts where in Scotland, because the Sibbitts were Lowlanders. Yes, we Sibbitts were in quite a situation because the English called us “Scots” and the Scots called us “English”. It was very confusing. The English in particular did not like us and called us Sibbitts treacherous and “horse thieves”.
Sibbitt family lore, as recounted by Wilmer L. Sibbitt, Sr in 1965 was that the Sibbitts were Scots-Irish (Ulster Scots) from Northern Ireland, and wanted by the British for being criminals and horse thieves.
“Yep,” Wilmer L. Sibbitt Sr said in 1965, “The Sibbitts are Scotch-Irish from Northern Ireland. It’s hard to believe that anything could be worse than being from Ireland, but things get worse. We Sibbitts are also descended from criminals and horse thieves (Wilmer Sibbitt smiled as he said this and was clearly proud of this fact). That’s why we Sibbitts had to come over here to the USA, to escape the British. So there you have it, we Sibbitts are from descended from criminals and horse thieves!”
This story, like similar stories from other Sibbet families, suggests that the Sibbets were Ulster Scot rebels and malcontents with a deep resentment towards the English. To support this story, the later immigration pattern of the Aaron-Solomon Sibbet family parallels that of the other Scots-Irish immigrants in America in general, and in Pennsylvania in particular. That is, rapid movement away from the East coast and then inland, first into the established Scots-Irish communities, especially those in Pennsylvania, and then eventually further west. Washington Co, PA, in particular, where both Solomon and Aaron Sibbet eventually immigrated ,was an established Scots-Irish community, and was teaming with radical Ulster Scot rebels who had recently been driven from Ireland.
Despite this history of rebelliousness and conflict with the English and recognition that the Sibbitts were descended from horse thieves and criminals (probably really rebels), the Sibbitts were very proud of their heritage. Mary G. Sibbitt Cox, the great granddaughter of Solomon Sibbet, would always seriously lecture her young Sibbitt grand nephews in the early 1920s:
“There is nothing a person a can be that is being better than being a Sibbitt. You should be proud that you are Sibbitts; we come from a great tradition. Being a Sibbitt is the best thing a person can be.”
The Thaddeus Warsaw Sibbitt family of Shelby, IL, descendants of Aaron Sibbet, have maintained that the father of Aaron Sibbet was a certain John Sibbet from Co. Armagh, Ulster, Ireland who died in Chester Co, PA in 1788. However, the identifiable John Sibbet of Chester and Co. Armagh, Ireland who indeed had a son Aaron Sibbet is too young to have been the father of Aaron and Solomon of Washington Co, PA. Furthermore, Aaron and Solomon Sibbet were still in New Jersey in the 1780s and 1790s when this John Sibbet was in Chester. Thus, even though the details of this Sibbitt family rumor are unsubstantiated, these multiple stories of Ulster-origin from different branches of the Sibbitt family support the general Sibbitt family tradition that the Sibbitts are descended from Scots-Irish immigrants from Ulster, Northern Ireland.
However, it is a possibility that the Aaron-Solomon Sibbet family is strictly from Scottish malcontents on the Sibbet side, but then had Ulster Scot origins on one of the female lines. Alternatively, it could be that Aaron and Solomon were of Scots origin themselves, but had cousins or uncles that were from Ulster. As an example, the Samuel Sibbet family of Cumberland Co, PA of the early 1800s, were themselves Scots-Irish (Ulster Scots), but their father, Robert Sibbet, was a Scotsman who immigrated to Ulster from Scotland. It is likely that certain of Robert Sibbet’s brothers or other Sibbet relatives decided to immigrate to the American colonies rather than to Ireland, thus, it is possible that the Aaron-Solomon Sibbet family had Ulster Scot first cousins.
Solomon Sibbet is likely to have been a Revolutionary War soldier, although this has yet to be confirmed in formal documents. There was a “Solomon Scepit” who was a Revolutionary War soldier in Massachusetts, and it is unknown whether the Sibbets were associated with Massachusetts or not at this period. Solomon Sibbet may also have been a soldier in the War of 1812. A certain “Solomon Scheived” was a private in 1st Regiment Riflemen (Humphrey’s) Pennsylvania Militia in the War of 1812. However, Solomon Sibbet was explicitly an officer in the 99 Reg. Pennsylvania Militia, First Battalion in 1805 at the rank of “Ensign” in the formal Washington Co. Militia papers, thus, it is likely he was at least in the home guard when the war started in 1812. The excerpt is as follows:
“I do by there (their) presents (presence) Certify that the officers to hear and Determine appeals for the Current year in the 99th Regt. Pennsylvania Militia are as follows (VDZ) first Battalion Capt. Tho. Vanvorhis, Lieut Andrew Sutton, Ensn Solomon Sibbit and 2nd Battalion Major Tho. Hopkins Capt Rich Crook and Lieut. Gries McIlwaine.

Solomon Sibbet married his first wife Hannah (surname unknown), probably in Somerset Co, New Jersey around 1791. He does appear as “Solliman Sibet” in the1791 NJ Tax Roles in West Precinct, Somerset County, NJ. In Somerset Co, NJ, they had their first two children, James Sibbet in 1792 and John Sibbet in 1795. In 1796 Solomon Sibbet and his older brother Aaron Sibbet left New Jersey, and on the 16 Nov 1796 bought land together in Washington Co. from a certain Aaron Van Camp and his wife Mary for a sum of “3 pounds lawful money”. The land was comprised of the area between Swamp Oak Tree Creek, Camp Smith, Sugar Tree Creek, a thorn tree on the bank of such creek, and land comprising “Issac’s Choice”. Subsequently, Solomon Sibbet was active in the community, and noted a number of times in the local Washington Co. paper. Solomon and Hannah Sibbet had three other children in the next several years:, “Peter” Sibbit 1800, William Sibbit in 1803 and Hannah Sibbit in 1803. In 1805, Aaron Sibbet sold some of the interest in the common land to Solomon, notably the portion called “Ten Mile”. In 1807, his brother Aaron Sibbet sold the remainder of his land in Washington Co to a John Ringer, and then Aaron Sibbet moved with his wife Elizabeth Marlen and his entire family to Warren Co, Ohio.
In about 1808, Solomon’s first wife Hannah died, and he subsequently married Elizabeth Barnet (b 1771 Washington Co, PA, d 9 Sept 1854, East Bethlehem Twp, Washington Co, PA, buried at James Barnard (Barnet) Farm, West Bethlehem Twp) (prior husband Ignatius Barnet, who had six children). With Elizabeth he had one child, Nancy Jane Sibbet who was born in 1811. In 1828 Solomon Sibbet’s oldest son, James Sibbet died, leaving 5 children, the widow Rachel Crispin Sibbet, and considerable debts accrued during the last year of James’ illness. Since James died intestate, the estate was processed through the Orphan’s Court, which appointed the younger brother of James, John Sibbet, and his father-in-law, Silas Crispin, as administrators. The administrators sold one third of the estate to pay off debts and taxes and then sold the remainder of the James Sibbet estate to William Sibbet, James Sibbet’s brother, so that it could remain in the Sibbet family. William Sibbet, then, permitted his sister-in-law, Rachel Crispin Sibbet, and his nieces and nephews to remain on the property until the widow Rachel Crispin married the widower, William Buckingham, in 1830. In 1832 the same scenario was repeated, as Solomon Sibbet’s second son, John Sibbet died, leaving the orphaned children Hannah Ball Sibbet and Solomon Sibbitt II.
Solomon Sibbet was concerned about the welfare of his orphaned Sibbet grandchildren, and particularly about the court-appointed guardian, Abraham Van Vorhis, who either was not performing adequately, did not want to be guardian anymore, or had died. Thus, in 1832 Solomon’s granddaughter, Sarah Sibbit, petitioned the court to make Solomon Sibbet her guardian, which was granted. Similarly, the other Sibbet children who were lodging with their step-father, William Buckingham, felt than Abraham VanVorhis was no longer adequate for their purposes, and thus, asked Solomon Sibbet to become the court-appointed guardian, which the court granted for the minors Hannah, Mary, John, and Nancy Sibbet, the children of James Sibbet, who was deceased.
In 1834, Solomon Sibbet died, leaving his widow, Elisabeth Barnet Sibbet, his son William, his daughter Hannah (married to John McRoberts of Amwell Twp), his daughter Nancy (married to David Bane or Bayne), “Peter” Sibbet (or other unnamed Sibbet), and his grandchildren, the children of his sons John Sibbet and James Sibbet. The property was partitioned in June of 1838. Solomon Sibbet’s wife, Elisabeth Barnet Sibbet, went to live with her son, and can be found in the in the 1850 census living with her daughter-in-law Catharine Barnet and granddaughter Josephine Barnet in the East Bethlehem Twp, Washington Co, PA. Elizabeth Barnet (Barnard) Sibbet died 9 Sept 1854 at the age of 83 years and is buried in the James Barnet (Barnard) Farm, West Bethlehem Twp, Washington Co, PA. Nathan Barnard (Barnet) was the administrator of her estate.
The location of Solomon Sibbet’s final resting place (and for that matter, the resting place of his sons John Sibbet, James Sibbet, William Sibbet) is unknown, but is presumed to be in West Bethlehem Twp, Washington Co, PA. Solomon Sibbet was a dynamic individual, a soldier, a farmer and businessman, a father, and a grandfather. He cared for his extended family until the end of his life, and certainly was a central figure in all of his grandchildren’s lives. There are at least 6 of his children, grandchildren, and great grand children named “Solomon Sibbet”, indicating the long-term impact he had upon his extended Sibbitt family.

Thus, Solomon Sibbet Bayne, apparently used “Sibbit” as his first name.
Solomon Sibbet Bayne and Mary E. Caldwell had the following children:
1)DAVID SYLVANUS BAYNE (Solomon Sibbet Bayne, Nancy Jane, Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet) (Birth: 1866, Death: 1954, buried in Lone Pine Cemetery, Amwell Twp, Washington Co, PA ) married Nellie H. (Bayne) (b: 1874, d 1936 in Lone Pine Cemetery ).

3. JOHN SIBBET (Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet)(b around 1795, LDS 1794, Somerset Co, NJ, d 25 Dec 1833, West Bethlehem Twp, Washington, PA.).
John Sibbet was the second oldest son of Solomon Sibbet, and was born around 1795, probably in Somerset, NJ. John Sibbett, like his brother James, was probably a War of 1812 soldier. A certain “John Sabott” is noted is the service records of the 1st Regiment Humphrey’s Pennsylvania Milita, the same regiment that had his father, “Solomon Scheived”. John Sibbet married Hannah (Charlotte) Ball (b1799 Washington, PA, died 1831 or 1832 West Bethlehem Twp, Washington, PA) on 13 Apr 1820 in Washington County PA. With Hannah Ball, John had at least 4 children, but only two survived to adulthood, Hannah Ball Sibbet and Solomon Sibbitt II. One of their small children, a girl, was supposed to have died in a tragic fire. After his older brother, James Sibbet died in 1828, John Sibbet and his brother William bought the James Sibbet farm, sold a portion to pay debts, and then incorporated the remainder into their own farms. John Sibbet died Dec 25, 1833 leaving his children Hannah Ball Sibbet and Solomon Sibbitt II orphans. The children were immediately taken care of by Solomon Sibbet, but after he died in 1834, the children were taken care of by other relatives. John Sibbet’s sister, Hannah Sibbet McRoberts and her husband John McRoberts of Amwell Twp, Washington Co. then became the guardians of Hannah Ball and Solomon Sibbitt II. The burial site of John Sibbet is unknown, but is probably in West Bethlehem Twp, Washington Co, PA.
John Sibbet and Hannah Ball had the following children:
i) 2 Unknown Sibbet daughters, (John, Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet). One of whom died in a fire prior to 1827.
ii) Unknown Sibbet son (John, Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet)(b approx 1825, d prior to 1833)
iii) HANNA BALL SIBBET (John, Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet) (B 22 September 1822, West Bethlehem Twp, Washington, PA-d 9 February 1905 Springfield, MO). Hannah was only 8 years old when her mother Hannah Ball died in 1831 and was only 10 years old when her father John Sibbet died. John McRobert, their uncle and husband of their aunt, Hannah Sibbet McRobert, petititioned the court and became the guardian of Hannah Ball Sibbet and Solomon Sibbitt II. Later Hannah married John Calvin Reed (b 31 Dec 1818 Beaver, PA, d 31 mar 1875, Springfield, MO) on Feb 9, 1843, and moved to Missouri and became Hannah Ball Sibbitt Reed.
Hannah Ball Sibbitt and John Calvin Reed had the following children:
1. ORVILLE SIBBETT REED (b17 October 1843 New Philadelphia, OH, d 17 Sept 1924, Pueblo, CO). Orville Sibbitt Read was a noted Ohio author. He married Sara B. McMillen (b 1850-1907)
Orville Sibbett Reed and Sara B. McMillen had the following children:
1. LORELLE VERNON REED (Birth: 25 MAY 1868 Death: 24 OCT 1936). 9 DEC 1891 he married Tessa Amanda ROOT (b: 27 Mar 1868 in Waterloo, Ohio, USA.)
2. MAUDE REED (b: 1870) She married Earnest Bachman.
3. HALLIE PEARL REED (B: 30 Jun 1873 d: 11 Sep. 1940). She married : 1 Charles HITCHCOCK, and 2 Harry SNEITER
4. PAUL REED (b: 1875).
5. LUCILLE REED (b: 1878).
2. FLORENCE REED (b 1846, d 1920)
3. HARRIET REED (b 1849-1933)
4. WALLACE REED (b 1854, d after 1860).
iv) SOLOMON SIBBETT, II (John, Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet) (b 1822 West Bethlehem Twp, Washington Co, PA- d March 11, 1875, East Pike Run Twp, Washington Co, PA, Buried in Howe Cemetery, East Pike Run Twp, Washington Co, PA).
Solomon Sibbitt II may have been the fraternal twin of Hannah Ball Sibbett, as they were born the same year. Solomon Sibbitt II was only 8 years old when his mother Hannah Ball died in 1831 and was only 10 years old when his father John Sibbet died. Subsequently, he was raised by his grandfather Solomon Sibbet, who also died in the mid-1830s. Afterwards he was taken care of by his Aunt Hannah (Sibbet) McRoberts until his adulthood. Solomon’s subsequent life until adulthood is unclear, but he established himself in East Pike Run, Washington Co, PA by 1850. Around 1849 Solomon married Charlotte J. Watt (also known as Sharlotte) (b Jul 1829, d approximately 1916, Coal Center, Washington Co), daughter of Catharine Watt (b 1789, d after 1850), and the sister of Emily D. Watt (wife of John Sibbit, Solomon Sibbitt’s first cousin). Thus, this is an example of two Sibbitt first cousins marrying sisters, resulting in children which are more related than regular cousins. Originally, Solomon Sibbett was a ships carpenter and farmer. However, Solomon Sibbitt, II was a very energetic individual who was prominent in the California Borough in Washington Co. in the 1840-1860 period. Solomon, who initially was a farmer, along with his partner, Lewis W. Morgan, opened the first store in the California Borough of Washington County in 1850. Solomon served as the first burgess of the town, and was an active and prominent citizen generally. He later served as a councilman, and was one of the charter members of the Freemason Lodge in Pikes Run, Washington, Co. He was listed in the town directory as a coal merchant, thus, he was a very active businessman, running at least 3 businesses (farm, coal business, and general store) simultaneously. He also set up “The Sibbitt Hotel” which was well known in the California Borough during the Civil War.
Solomon Sibbitt III recognized that coal was needed in the cities. He bought an old decrepit boat, and using his ships carpenter skills, converted it into a barge. He then filled it to the brim with bushels of coal, and shipped down the East Pike River to market. Solomon Sibbitt was one of the first individuals to ship coal to the cities by barge in Washington Co PA. This shipping of coal by barge became a huge business in the years to come, and Lewis M. Morgan, business partner of Solomon Sibbitt, always admired his partner’s foresight.
In 1860 Solomon moved to Greenfield Twp, Washington Co, PA, close to Coal Center, and continued his business activities. He lived in Coal Center until March 10, 1875, when he died intestate. He was buried in Howe Cemetery, East Pike Run Twp, Washington Co, PA. His tombstone reads “Solomon Sibbit - died Mch 10 1875 - 53 yrs”
Since Solomon died intestate, the property devolved to his wife, Charlotte J. Watt Sibbitt, and ultimately to his children, Lewis M. Sibbitt, William A. Sibbitt, Ella May Sibbitt and Solomon Sibbitt III. His wife Charlotte Watt continued to raise her children and live in the Coal Center area. After Lewis left the house, she lived with her sons William and Solomon III, but ultimately she lived with her spinster daughter, Ella May Sibbitt and the two older women can be observed in the 1910 census. Charlotte Watt Sibbitt died at the age of about 88 years old in about 1916. Her burial site is unknown, but probably is in Coal Center, PA. Her will was probated January 9 1917, and all of her property devolved to her daughter, Ella May Sibbitt, as all of her sons were dead.
Children of Solomon Sibbitt II and Charlotte J. Watt:
1) WILLIAM ADAM SIBBIT, (Solomon II, John, Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet)(b March 1858 Washington Co, PA, East Pike Run Twp, Washington Co, PA, d between 1900-1910, Coal Center, Washington Co, PA). William A. Sibbit reached adulthood, worked as a clerk and bookkeeper in a store in Washington Co, PA. His mother, Charlotte Watt Sibbitt, lived with him and his sister Ella May for many years in Coal Center Twp, Washington Co, PA. He apparently died before 1916. His burial site is unknown.
2) ELLA MAY SIBBITT (Solomon II, John, Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet)(b Aug 1869 East Pike Run Twp, Washington Co, PA, , d after 1920 in Coal Center, Washington Co, PA). Ella May Sibbitt was a school teacher, and lived with her mother in Coal Center for the remainder of her life. She never married, and remained a spinster for her entire life. She can be observed with her mother in the 1900 and 1910 Federal Census. After her mother’s death in 1916, she inherited her mother’s property. On Oct 1, 1918 she deeded a portion of her land to her niece Edna Sibbitt, the daughter of Lewis M. Sibbitt. Ella May lived her entire life in Coal Center, Washington Co, PA, but her burial site is unknown but is presumed to be in the same community.
3) LEWIS M.(LOUIS M) SIBBITT (Solomon II, John, Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet)(b Sept 1853 California Borough, East Pike Run Twp, Washington Co, PA, died 1911 East Pike Run Twp, Washington Co, PA buried in Howe Cemetery, East Pike Run Twp, Washington Co, PA). Lewis M. Sibbitt was named after his father’s business partner, Lewis M. Morgan, with whom Solomon Sibbitt had set up the first general store in California Borough, East Pike Run Twp, Washington Co, PA. Lewis M. Sibbitt’s profession was a worker in a tinmill and as postmaster. He married Alice Craich (b 1853, d after 1900) around 1878. In the History of Washington Co, PA, East Pike Run Twp, Lewis M. Sibbet is noted as a Charter member of Pike Run Lodge, No. 1687, Knights of Phythis, which was granted 8 Sept 1881. In 1900 he lived in Westmoreland Co, Resosaver, Twp. He died in 1911 in Calfornia Borough, East Pike Run Twp, Washington Co PA and is buried in Howe Cemetery of the same location.

They had at least one child Alice Lavone Pierce (b 21 Jan 1909, death unknown). In1918 she received a portion of the Sibbitt land, deeded to her by her aunt, Ella May Sibbitt. Jessie Pearl Sibbit and John Shugart Pierce had one child, Alice Lavonne Pierce (b 21 Jan 1909, d unknown).
4) ANNIE SIBBIT (Solomon II, John, Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet)(born Sept 20, 1871, Coal Center, Washington Co, PA died 04, Nov 1871, Coal Center, Washington Co, PA buried in Old California (Union) Cemetery Washington Co) . 4. WILLIAM SIBBET (Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet)(b 1803 in Amwell Twp Washington Co, PA, d approximately 1857, Otter Twp, Lucas Co, Iowa).
William Sibbet was the youngest son of Solomon Sibbet I, and was born in 1803 in Amwell Twp or West Bethlehem Twp, Washington Co, PA. William may have been too young to serve in the War of 1812 (he was 9 when the war began and 11 when it ended). When his older brother James Sibbet died in 1828, William and his older brother John Sibbet bought the deceased James Sibbet’s land, sold a portion to pay the debts of their brother, and then incorporated the remaining land into their own farms. William Sibbitt had a first wife whose name is not known, (b 1805, d before 1840) and after bearing him 2 daughters and 1 son, she died between 1835. Subsequently William Sibbit, while he was living in Fayette Co, PA married Lucinda (also known as Lucy, last name not known) (B 1809 in Washington Co, PA, died after 1870 in Grundy Co, Missori) in Washington Co, PA around 1836.
William survived the deaths of both his brothers (in 1828 and 1833), and his father Solomon (in 1834), and thus William became the de facto patriarch of the Solomon Sibbet family, and highly influenced the migration of his younger Sibbitt relatives both within Pennsylvania, and later to Ohio and further west. Almost immediately in about 1843, his niece, Sarah Sibbet Critchfield, daughter of his brother James Sibbet and wife of Josiah Critchfield, moved from Washington Co PA to Fayette Co, PA close to William Sibbet’s farm.
William Sibbet himself was very restless. In the early 1850s, he moved his family from Fayette Co, PA to Otter Creek Twp, Lucas Co, Iowa. It is unknown why he migrated to Iowa, but he did have Sibbitt first cousins in the Midwest already, especially Richard Marlen Sibbitt and Benjamin Sibbitt in Indiana, and William Sibbitt in Ohio. He also had a second cousin, Benjamin Franklin Sibbitt who was already in Iowa, and served in the Iowa volunteers during the Civil War. Otter Creek Twp, Lucas Co. is area of Iowa is exactly where his nieces Sarah Sibbet Critchfield and Mary Sibbet Register later migrated and established themselves and families, and it is believed that it was his presence which brought them to Iowa. William Sibbet died in about 1857, and is presumably buried in Otter Twp, Lucas Co, Iowa. His wife Lucinda Sibbet and his sons John, Josiah, and William remained in Lucas Co, Iowa through 1860, and they can be found in the 1860 federal census in this location.
During the Civil War, John Sibbit, served in the US military. However, after the Civil War, Lucinda and Josiah, John, and William Sibbit moved from Iowa to Missouri where they became established. In the 1870 census of Grundy Co, MO Josiah has married, is a blacksmith, and his mother Lucinda is still living with him. In 1870 John Sibbet can be found in Clinton Co, MO, where he is listed as a painter. Lucinda Sibbet, as an elderly person of about 69 years old, married a Samuel M Roland in Grundy Co, MO on 5 Sep 1874. She died after 1875, but her burial site is unknown. William Sibbet, through his son Josiah Sibbit, is the ancestor of the very large Sibbit family based in Grundy Co, MO, and portion of which later migrated to Arkansas.

5) JOHN SIBBET (William, Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet)(b 1845 Wharton Twp, Fayette Co, Penn, d 28 Feb 1877 Clinton Co, MO).
John Sibbet was born in Wharton Twp, Fayette Co, Penn and is noted in the 1850 census for that county. In about 1852 he moved to Otter Creek Twp, Lucas Co, IA with his mother and father William Sibbet. After his father’s death in about 1855, it is believed that John Sibbet returned to visit his relatives in PA, and while there, joined the military and fought in the Civil War. He enlisted as a Private on 16 Sept 1861, Co. G, 104th Infantry Regiment PA. He was promoted to a Full Corporal on 6 Mar 1864, and was mustered out 30 Sept 1864. After the war, he returned to Missouri and can be seen in the census there in 1870 in Clinton, MO where he is noted as a “painter” and as being from Pennsylvania. He married Mary Anne Hays (b 22 Feb 1855 Henry, Clinton MO) 30 Jul 1873, Clinton, MO. The couple moved to Texas by 1876, and while there had one child, Louis Sibbit (b. 1876 Texas, d 1 June 1900, Boulder Co, CO). Subsequently the couple moved back to Missouri and John Sibbet died there, in Clinton, MO, on 28 Feb1877. By 1880 Mary Hays Sibbit moved to Boulder Co, Boulder Twp, CO. Her 4 year old son Louis Sibbitt accompanied her, and can be noted in the 1880 census. In Boulder, she married a Henry A. Shumway on 18 May 1881, who died approximately 1888. The local Boulder Co. paper stated:
“Mrs. Mary A. (Hays) Sibbits" married Henry A. Shumway "formerly of Jamestown" at the "Christian Church in Boulder" on May 18, 1881”.
After Shumway’s death, she married again on 3 Dec 1889, this time to a Charles W. Clapp in Arapahoe Co (and the minister was her husband’s second cousin, James Wilber Sibbit),. On 25 Jul 1891 she applied for a widow’s pension based on her husband’s service in the Civil War, and it was granted. On June 1, 1900 Mary’s son, Lewis Sibbit, died in a mining accident. Mary A. Hays had a number of children with her other husbands, but these are not Sibbets.
Children of John Sibbet and Mary A. Hays:
a) LOUIS SIBBIT (John, William, Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet)(b 1876 Texas, d June 1, 1900 Boulder Co, CO, buried in Colombia or Boulder Cemetery, Boulder CO). Louis Sibbit was born in Texas in 1876, the son of John Sibbet and Mary Anne Hays. After the death of his father John Sibbit in 1877, Louis Sibbit and his mother Mary Sibbit moved to Boulder Co, CO by 1880. His widowed mother then married Henry Shumway and in 1888, when Louis was 12 years old, married Charles W. Clapp. Louis Sibbet evidently became a butcher, and later a miner, and died in a mining accident on June 1, 1900. The local paper noted:
“Louis Sibbit was killed in a mine accident on June 1, 1900. He lived with his mother Mrs. Shumway in Boulder. Buried in Boulder Cemetery.”
His grave is very close to the infant girls of his distant cousin, James Wilber Sibbit.
6) WILLIAM SIBBIT (William, Solomon I, Ancestral James Sibbet)(b 1850 Wharton Twp, Fayette Co, Penn, death unknown, but after 1860 probably in Lucas Co, IA or Grundy Co, MO.)
William Sibbit was born 1849 in Fayette Co, PA, to William and Lucinda Sibbet, and can be observed in the 1850 census. In 1860 he was in Otter Creek Twp Lucas Co, IA and by 1870 he was lost to the US Federal Census. Presumably he died between 1860 and 1870, he was too young to have fought in the Civil War except as a drummer boy or other adolescent auxiliary.

By 1865, he and his mother Lucinda had moved to Grundy Co, MO. It is unclear whether he served during the Civil War, although he is about the appropriate age. After the Civil War, Josiah Sibbit married Buenevista Faust (b circa 1850 Ireland, died around 1880) on10 Oct 1867, Grundy MO. In 1870 Federal Census, Josiah (age 23, PA), Buenevista (age 17, MO), Dexter (age 2 months, MO), and Lucinda (age 62, PA) can be seen in Washington Twp, Grundy Co, MO Josiah Sibbit was a blacksmith, and his mother lived with him until her marriage to the old widower Samuel M Roland on 5 Sep 1874. Buenevista Faust evidently died around 1880, and Josiah Sibbit married again, his second wife being Harriet E Roberts ( b 2 Mar 1852, IN, d 12 Mar 1907 Grundy Co, MO, buried in Trenton Masonic Cemetery, Grundy County, MO). Josiah Sibbit is the ancestor of the majority of the numerous Missouri Sibbits and Sibbitts.

“Peter” Sibbet is an unnamed child of the Property Partitions of the Estate of Solomon Sibbet, I of June 1838. This individual is termed “Peter” because “Peter Sibbet” of Morris Twp, Washington Co. is the only other Sibbet noted in Washington Co, PA census for 1840. “Peter Sibbet” died around 1845, and virtually nothing is known about him. However, a child that age is noted in the households of Solomon Sibbet in the early 1800s. It is believed that “Peter”Sibbet married a Jane (Last name unknown) (b 1807, d after 1860) around 1824 in Washington Co PA.
